Process

How It Works

From enrollment to your first attorney client — here's exactly what to expect.

01

Choose Your Enrollment Option

Head to the pricing page and pick the plan that fits where you are. Chapter 7 Only ($897) if you want to specialize in liquidation cases. Chapter 13 Only ($897) if you already know Chapter 7. Full CPDS Bundle ($1,497) if you want both courses, the business launch course, and your directory listing.

02

Get Instant Access

After checkout you'll create your account. Your courses are available immediately — no waiting, no approval process. Work at whatever pace fits your life.

03

Start with Chapter 7 (or your chosen course)

CH7-01 starts with Bankruptcy Foundations — your role under 11 U.S.C. § 110, what you can and can't do, and required disclosure obligations. Everything else builds from there.

04

Complete All Modules in Your Course

Work through each module in sequence. Video instruction, downloadable reference materials, and knowledge checks at each stage reinforce what you're learning.

05

Pass Your CPDS Exam

When you've completed all required modules, sit for the CPDS-7 and/or CPDS-13 exam. 50 questions, 80% passing, open book. You have unlimited retakes.

06

Earn Your CPDS Credential

Pass both exams and receive your Certified Petition Drafting Specialist credential + your listing in the North Star Petition Services attorney referral directory.

07

Use the Business Toolkit to Find Clients

The BIZ course and bundled resources — including attorney outreach email templates and the pricing calculator — give you everything you need to approach bankruptcy attorneys professionally.

08

Start Billing for Petition Prep Work

Your first attorney client may come sooner than you expect. The referral directory listing puts you in front of attorneys who are actively looking for trained VBAs.

Common Questions About the Process

Do I need legal background to start?
No. CH7-01 starts from zero. The legal foundation is built in the first module before any petition prep training begins.
How much time per week does training take?
Most students spend 3–6 hours per week and finish in 4–6 weeks. No deadlines, no live sessions to attend.
What happens if I fail a CPDS exam?
Unlimited retakes. Review the relevant modules, then retake at any time. There's no penalty for retaking.
Is there job placement after I graduate?
VBAs work as independent contractors, not employees. There's no formal placement service. The attorney referral directory listing (included with the Full Bundle) connects you with attorneys looking for trained VBAs, and the BIZ course teaches you how to market yourself directly.
